Dexter is the largest city in Stoddard County and is located about 8 miles south of Bloomfield, Missouri, the county seat of Stoddard County.

Dexter was planned by the Cairo, Arkansas, and Texas Railroad Company. Much of the city’s purpose revolved around promoting the railroad and serving as a depot.
