Located in northeastern Arkansas is a small city known as Manila. The city is located a short distance from the Missouri and Tennessee state borders. Manila is positioned in Mississippi County and is the 7th largest city located therein. In 2016, the United States Census Bureau reported 3,220 people lived in Manila.
In the late 1860s, John U. Needham arrived in the area of present-day Manila and established a permanent camp for his grazing stock. By the turn of the 20th century, twenty registered voters lived in a community that had sprung up. In 1901, the community decided to incorporate and chose to name their town Manila to honor Commodore George Dewey’s accomplishments during the Spanish-American War. Dewey won a decisive battle at Manila Bay which gave rise to American control of the Philippines for a number of years.
